Lyabi-Hauz is a historic pool at the centre of Bukhara, surrounded by mulberry trees and three 16th- and 17th-century Islamic monuments including the Kukeldash Madrasa and the Nadir Divan-Beghi Khanqah. The pool was one of the last to survive a Soviet-era drainage programme that eliminated most of Bukhara's traditional cisterns. The shaded plaza remains the social heart of the old city and a calm counterpoint to the more visited monuments.
