Old San Juan occupies a small peninsula at the entrance to San Juan Bay, enclosed by 16th-century Spanish colonial fortifications including the massive Castillo San Felipe del Morro and the smaller Castillo San Cristóbal. The UNESCO-listed historic district is characterised by narrow, blue cobblestone streets (paved with adoquines, slag bricks brought as ballast), brightly painted stucco townhouses with iron balconies, and plazas shaded by tropical trees. The Paseo del Morro, a grassy esplanade below the walls, offers unobstructed views across the Atlantic.
