A museum of the cultures of the Americas housed in the former Ballajá Barracks, a monumental nineteenth-century Spanish military building in Old San Juan arranged around a large central courtyard. Its permanent exhibitions explore the popular arts, African heritage, indigenous peoples and the conquest and colonisation of the hemisphere. The imposing three-storey structure, one of the last built by Spain in the New World, is itself a highlight, anchoring a cultural precinct beside the fortifications.
