A massive wooden gate set into the fortified walls of the old city, once the main ceremonial entrance for dignitaries and cargo arriving by sea. Painted red and topped with an inscription, it is the last survivor of the several gates that pierced the ramparts in the eighteenth century. Passing through it, visitors follow the route new arrivals once took toward the cathedral to give thanks for a safe voyage. The gate connects the bayside promenade with the streets of the historic quarter.
