A tree-lined nineteenth-century promenade running along the base of the old city walls beside San Juan Bay. Restored as a pedestrian esplanade, it is decorated with fountains, statues and street lamps and passes a former prison that now houses a tourism office. Its centrepiece is the bronze Raices Fountain celebrating the island's Taíno, African and Spanish roots. Vendors and musicians line the walk on weekends, and it links the harbour gate to the massive coastal fortifications, offering some of the best sea views in the historic quarter.
