El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System, covering the northeastern slopes of the Sierra de Luquillo mountains of Puerto Rico. The forest receives over 3,500 millimetres of rainfall annually at lower elevations, supporting towering sierra palms, orchids, and the critically endangered Puerto Rican parrot. The La Mina and Juan Diego rivers descend through the park past several accessible swimming holes and waterfalls, most notably La Mina Falls.
