The principal art museum of the island, opened in 2000 in the Santurce district within a restored 1920s hospital building enlarged by a modern glass wing. Its galleries trace Puerto Rican art from the seventeenth century to the present, including work by leading painters and printmakers, and it hosts international exhibitions. Behind the building lies a sculpture garden with native plants, a stained-glass installation and an ornamental lake, rounding out one of the Caribbean's most significant art institutions.
