Charles IV made Prague his imperial capital in the 14th century, and the city he shaped — Hradčany with its castle, St Vitus Cathedral, the Charles Bridge strung across the Vltava — still forms one of the world's great urban ensembles. Old Town, Lesser Town and New Town grew together between the 11th and 18th centuries, layering Gothic and Baroque splendour street upon street. UNESCO inscribed the historic centre in 1992 as a World Heritage Site.
