This large bronze memorial dominates one end of the Old Town Square in Prague, honouring the fifteenth-century religious reformer Jan Hus, who was burned at the stake for heresy. Unveiled in 1915 on the five-hundredth anniversary of his death, it was created by sculptor Ladislav Šaloun in an expressive Art Nouveau style. Hus stands tall and resolute amid groups of exiled Protestants and Hussite warriors. The monument became a rallying symbol of Czech national identity.
