Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory, Australia's most northerly city, situated on a harbour opening to the Timor Sea at the top of the continent. The city's tropical wet-dry climate creates dramatic afternoon storm spectacles during the build-up and wet season from October to April, while the dry season brings crowded waterfront markets and outdoor events. Darwin's history as the only Australian city bombed during World War II, attacked 64 times in 1942 and 1943, is documented at the Darwin Military Museum and memorials along the esplanade.
