Little India is Singapore's most colourful ethnic district, centred on Serangoon Road and developed from the 1820s as the commercial hub of the Tamil and other South Asian immigrant communities. Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, dedicated to the goddess Kali, anchors the neighbourhood's religious life with a richly ornamented gopuram visible above the shophouse rooflines. The Tekka Centre wet market and the flower stalls at the corner of Serangoon Road and Buffalo Road are gathering points for the community at all hours.
