Kampong Glam was designated as the Malay quarter of Singapore under Raffles' 1822 town plan and retains its historic identity around the Sultan Mosque and the Istana Kampong Glam. Arab Street and Haji Lane are celebrated for their contrasting characters — Arab Street for fabric shops and Middle Eastern goods, Haji Lane for its pastel shophouses occupied by independent boutiques and cafes. The Sultan Mosque's golden dome and white facade are a frequently photographed landmark best captured from the Muscat Street approach.
