The Sultan Mosque is the most prominent Islamic place of worship in Singapore, standing at the heart of the historic Kampong Glam quarter. Its golden domes, rebuilt in the 1920s, rest on a base ringed with the ends of glass bottles donated by poorer worshippers so all could contribute. The vast prayer hall serves the surrounding Malay-Muslim community, and the surrounding lanes bustle with textile shops, cafes, and restored shophouses. A national monument, it anchors a district that preserves the area's royal Malay and trading heritage.
