Unlike most Korean Buddhist temples built in mountain forest, Haedong Yonggungsa occupies a coastal promontory at Busan's northeastern edge, where its stone pagodas, guardian statues, and main hall are positioned directly above the breaking East Sea surf. The dramatic juxtaposition of sacred architecture and open ocean, particularly in morning light, makes it one of the most photographed temples in the country.
