A flatland castle built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, enclosed by double moats and stone walls. The Ninomaru Palace interior features nightingale floors engineered to squeak underfoot as an intrusion-detection system, along with lavishly painted Kano school sliding doors. The surrounding garden with its seasonal plantings was redesigned during the Meiji era.
