Nishi Hongan-ji is the western head temple of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism and part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto World Heritage listing. Its grand Amida Hall and Founder's Hall carry elaborate gilt ornamentation, while smaller structures preserve some of the finest surviving Momoyama-period art, including carved gates and lavishly painted rooms. A famous ginkgo tree in the courtyard, spreading almost horizontally, is said to be centuries old. The temple sits within walking distance of Kyoto Station and admission is free.
