The Kyoto International Manga Museum occupies a converted elementary school in central Kyoto and celebrates Japan's comic art as both entertainment and cultural heritage. Its shelves, stretching the length of the building, hold hundreds of thousands of volumes that visitors are free to pull down and read anywhere on the premises, including the grassy lawn outside. Exhibits trace the history and craft of manga, from woodblock precursors to modern series, and artists give live illustration demonstrations.
