Gion, Kyoto

Kyoto's most storied entertainment district, centered on Hanamikoji Street where traditional wooden machiya townhouses and ochaya teahouses line narrow lanes. The area remains one of the few places in Japan where geiko and maiko can be observed going about their professional engagements in the evening hours. Stone-paved Shirakawa Canal adds an atmospheric secondary corridor for evening photography.
