Myoshin-ji is the head temple of the largest branch of Rinzai Zen Buddhism, filling a temple town in northwest Kyoto with dozens of subtemples along stone lanes. Its main hall is known for a swirling dragon painted on the ceiling that seems to follow visitors, and for one of Japan's oldest cast bells. Several subtemples, including Taizo-in with its celebrated garden, welcome guests. The complex also offers introductory zazen meditation and overnight temple lodging, giving a rare window into practicing monastic life.
