Wrocław's Market Square is one of the largest medieval market squares in Central Europe, ringed by Gothic and baroque burgher houses rebuilt after wartime destruction and restored to vivid colours. The city occupies a cluster of islands in the Oder River, linked by over 100 bridges, and the Cathedral Island retains the twin-spired Cathedral of St John the Baptist alongside a dozen other historic churches within a few hundred metres. The city's gnome statues — small bronze figures in hundreds of locations — have become an unofficial symbol of its irreverent urban character.
