Bern is the federal capital of Switzerland, its medieval arcaded old town built on a sandstone peninsula encircled by a broad meander of the Aare river. The Zytglogge, a medieval clock tower with an astronomical clock dating to 1530, marks the former western gate of the city. The six kilometres of covered sandstone arcades running through the old town allow continuous movement through the city centre regardless of weather, and the ensemble is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
