The oldest art museum in Switzerland with a permanent collection, the Kunstmuseum Bern opened in 1879 and holds works spanning eight centuries. Its galleries move from late-Gothic Bernese altarpieces through Swiss masters such as Ferdinand Hodler to Impressionist, Cubist and modern pieces. It drew international attention when it inherited part of the Gurlitt trove, a hoard tied to Nazi-era looting. Housed in a nineteenth-century block with a modern extension, it lies a short walk from the railway station.
