Spetses is a Saronic island near the Peloponnese coast, similarly vehicle-restricted to Hydra though bicycles and horse-drawn carriages circulate on the main coastal road. The island played a significant role in the Greek War of Independence and a number of the mansions of its sea-captain families from that period survive near the old harbour. The pine-covered hills and the series of pebble beaches along the western coast provide an inland and coastal landscape unusual among the Saronic islands.
