Epidaurus was antiquity's great place of healing. In a quiet valley of the Peloponnese, the sanctuary of Asklepios grew out of an older cult of Apollo into the classical world's most famous medical shrine, its temples standing beside buildings for the sick. The 4th-century theatre, celebrated for its near-perfect acoustics, counts among the purest achievements of Greek architecture. The sanctuary joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988.
