Nafplio is a compact port town on the northeastern Peloponnese coast, which served as the first capital of independent Greece from 1828 to 1834. The old town occupies a small peninsula below the massive Palamidi fortress, which rises 216 metres above the bay on a near-vertical rocky outcrop approached by a stairway of 913 steps. The neoclassical and Venetian architecture of the pedestrianised old quarter, the small Bourtzi fortress on a harbour islet, and the surrounding landscape make it one of the most scenically coherent towns in the country.
