The surviving western tower of the Upper Castle of Vilnius, dating to the early 15th century, stands on a steep wooded hill above the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers at the centre of the city. The hilltop provides a 360-degree panorama over the old town rooftops, the modern city beyond, and the surrounding forested ridges. It is the most widely recognised symbol of Lithuania, depicted on the national currency and the city's official emblem.
