The medieval core of the Lithuanian capital is one of the largest and best-preserved old town centres in northern Europe, its winding streets containing more than 1,500 historic buildings spanning Gothic, Renaissance, baroque, and neoclassical styles. The skyline of church towers and spires visible from Gediminas Hill has defined the city's image since the 14th century. The bohemian district of Užupis — a self-declared republic within the old town — adds an eccentric contemporary layer to the historic fabric.
