No city in Central Asia preserves its medieval body as completely as Bukhara, a Silk Road centre with more than two millennia behind it. Within its largely intact old fabric stand the exquisite 10th-century tomb of Ismail Samani — brickwork of legendary refinement — and a wealth of madrasas from the 17th century. UNESCO inscribed the historic centre in 1993.
