Layers of Central Europe meet in L'viv, a city established in the late medieval period that prospered for centuries as a hub of trade, administration and faith in western Ukraine. Its medieval street pattern survives essentially unchanged, threaded with reminders of the many communities — Armenian, Jewish, Polish, German and Ukrainian among them — that once shared the city, and graced by fine Baroque architecture. UNESCO inscribed the historic centre in 1998.
