Barrio Lastarria is a compact historic quarter in central Santiago, laid out around a curving street lined with early twentieth-century townhouses and small palaces. Long favoured by writers and artists, it developed into one of the city's cultural districts, holding museums, bookshops, cafes and a hillside park nearby. Its low, ornamented buildings and cobbled side lanes contrast with the surrounding modern blocks. Visitors browse a weekend antiques and book market.
