Laid out along the canalized Mapocho River in the early twentieth century, this long, tree-shaded park brought a strip of European-style greenery to central Santiago. Its landscaped paths link the fine arts museum, monuments and fountains, and it borders the bohemian Bellavista district. Jacaranda and plane trees shade benches busy with families, joggers and students. The park was central to the belle-époque reshaping of the capital and remains one of its most beloved public spaces.
