One of the oldest churches in Santiago, San Agustín was first founded in the sixteenth century and rebuilt after earthquakes damaged successive structures. It is best known for a wooden statue of Christ, the Cristo de Mayo, whose thorn crown legendarily slipped from head to neck during a devastating 1647 quake and has since been carried in procession. The colonial church and convent preserve altarpieces and religious art. It links the city's devotional traditions to memories of seismic catastrophe.
