The Merchant City is a historic district in the heart of Glasgow, developed in the 18th century by the tobacco and sugar merchants who grew wealthy on Atlantic trade. Its grid of streets is lined with grand classical warehouses, banks and mansions, many named after the traders and their colonial connections. Long industrial and then neglected, the area was regenerated into a fashionable quarter of restaurants, boutiques and loft apartments. Landmarks include the old Tobacco Exchange and the City Halls amid confident Georgian architecture.
