Housed in a grand neoclassical mansion on Royal Exchange Square, this is the city's main contemporary art venue. The building began as a wealthy tobacco merchant's townhouse in the 1770s and later served as a bank and library before becoming a gallery in 1996. Its collections and changing exhibitions focus on modern and contemporary work by Scottish and international artists. Outside stands the equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington, famous for the traffic cone that visitors habitually place on its head.
