This art school on a steep hill in the city centre is celebrated as the masterpiece of architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who designed its main building in stages around 1900. The structure combined Scottish baronial forms with pioneering Art Nouveau interiors, most famously in its dramatic library. A devastating fire in 2014 and a second in 2018 gutted the Mackintosh building, and a long restoration has been undertaken. The school remains an active institution and a landmark of modern architectural history.
