Riddarholmen is a small historic islet adjoining Stockholm's old town, once the aristocratic quarter of the city. Dominated by the cast-iron spire of the Riddarholmen Church, the burial place of Swedish monarchs, it is ringed by 17th-century palaces built by noble families near the royal court. Quiet cobbled lanes and a waterside terrace offer sweeping views across the bay toward the city hall. Largely free of shops and crowds, the islet preserves a stately, hushed atmosphere distinct from the busier heart of the old town nearby.
