The Niederdorf is the pedestrianised heart of Zurich's old town on the east bank of the Limmat river. Its narrow lanes wind between medieval and early-modern houses, opening onto small squares and stairways that climb toward the twin towers of the Grossmünster. Once a district of guildsmen and tradespeople, it now brims with cafes, bookshops, bars and boutiques. Historic guildhalls line the nearby riverfront, and hidden courtyards reward the curious. In the evenings the quarter fills with strollers enjoying its lantern-lit atmosphere.
