The Albaicín is the old Moorish quarter of Granada, climbing the hillside opposite the Alhambra in a maze of steep cobbled lanes and whitewashed houses. It preserves the medieval Muslim street plan more completely than almost anywhere in Spain, with cármenes, walled houses enclosing private gardens, hidden behind high walls. Cisterns, gateways and a few minaret-turned-belltowers recall its Nasrid past. The Mirador de San Nicolás offers a celebrated panorama of the Alhambra against the Sierra Nevada.
