The Comedy Theatre of Budapest, opened in 1896, occupies a grand eclectic building near the Danube on the Pest side. Designed by the prolific Viennese theatre architects Fellner and Helmer, its lavish auditorium once ranked among the largest in the city. Devoted chiefly to comedy and drama, it has premiered many important Hungarian plays over its long history. Damaged in the war and later rebuilt, it remains one of the capital's most prominent playhouses, its ornate façade a recognisable feature of the northern inner city.
