Standing on Porto's Praça de Dom João I, this theatre opened in the 1910s and was rebuilt in a striking Art Deco style in the 1930s. Its clean geometric façade and streamlined interior mark it as one of the finest modernist performance buildings in northern Portugal. Municipally run, it hosts theatre, dance, film and concerts and serves as a hub for the city's contemporary arts scene. The main auditorium retains period detailing, and the building often anchors Porto's cultural events calendar throughout the year.
