Porto stacks itself up the hillsides where the Douro meets the sea — a townscape 2,000 years in the making, from the Portus of the Romans to the Romanesque choir of its cathedral, the neoclassical Stock Exchange and the Manueline Church of Santa Clara. The iron arc of the Luiz I Bridge links it to the Monastery of Serra do Pilar and the port-wine lodges across the river. UNESCO inscribed the ensemble in 1996.
