This medieval merchant house near the Douro waterfront is traditionally said to be the birthplace of Prince Henry the Navigator in 1394, and later served as Porto's royal customs house and mint. Excavations beneath the building revealed Roman remains, including well-preserved mosaic floors now displayed in place. The upper floors house the city's historical archive and an exhibition tracing Porto's role in maritime trade and the age of discoveries. Its layers, from Roman house to medieval customs post, unfold across the granite structure.
