The Micalet, also called El Miguelete, is the bell tower of Valencia Cathedral, a Gothic octagonal campanile begun in the late fourteenth century and completed in the fifteenth. Rising about 51 metres, it takes its name from the great bell of Saint Michael cast in the eighteenth century. Visitors climb a tight spiral staircase of around 200 steps to a terrace at the top, overlooking the tiled domes, the cathedral square and the compact old town. Its silhouette is one of the most recognisable features of the city.
