Merchants once haggled over silk beneath the twisted columns of the Sala de Contratación, a hall that ranks among the boldest spaces of late Gothic Europe. Valencia's Silk Exchange, raised between 1482 and 1533, announced the wealth of a Mediterranean trading power at its height across the 15th and 16th centuries — and commerce has animated the complex ever since. UNESCO inscribed La Lonja de la Seda in 1996.
