Volkspark Friedrichshain is the oldest public park in Berlin, opened in 1848 on the northeastern edge of the historic city. Its rolling terrain includes two artificial hills built from wartime rubble that now carry woodland and viewpoints. The park's centrepiece is the ornate Fairytale Fountain, a curved arcade of stone figures drawn from the tales of the Brothers Grimm. Sports grounds, an open-air cinema and a memorial to fallen revolutionaries give the park a layered civic history.
