The Rotes Rathaus, or Red City Hall, is the seat of Berlin's governing mayor and senate, named for the red clinker bricks of its facade rather than any political meaning. Completed in 1869 in a Renaissance Revival style, its tall clock tower is a landmark near Alexanderplatz. A terracotta frieze around the building depicts scenes from the city's history. Rebuilt after wartime damage, it again serves the city administration. Parts of the building are accessible to the public, and the surrounding square is a lively gathering place.
