The Nikolaiviertel is a reconstructed medieval quarter beside the Spree regarded as the historic birthplace of Berlin. Centred on the twin-spired Nicholas Church, the city's oldest, the district was rebuilt by East Germany for Berlin's 750th anniversary in 1987 using restored old buildings and new construction in traditional styles. Narrow cobbled lanes wind past taverns, craft shops, and gabled houses, recreating the atmosphere of the old town flattened during the war. It offers a compact, walkable contrast to the surrounding modern city.
