This neoclassical building on Unter den Linden serves as Germany's central memorial to the victims of war and tyranny. Designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and completed in 1818 as a royal guardhouse, it was repurposed as a memorial in the twentieth century. Its austere interior is now empty except for an enlarged bronze sculpture by Käthe Kollwitz depicting a mother cradling her dead son. An oculus leaves the figure exposed to rain and cold, underscoring the suffering it evokes.
