Alexanderplatz is the vast public square at the heart of former East Berlin, long a hub of transport, commerce, and civic life. Named after Tsar Alexander I following his visit in 1805, it was rebuilt as a socialist showpiece after wartime destruction. The square is dominated by the World Time Clock, a rotating column indicating the hour in cities around the globe, and the fountain known as the Fountain of Friendship among Peoples. Trams, trains, and shoppers converge here beneath the nearby television tower.
