Piața Sfatului, Council Square, is the historic central square of Brașov in Transylvania, ringed by the colourful merchant houses of the medieval Saxon town. The old council house with its clock tower stands at the centre, now the county history museum, and the massive Gothic Black Church rises just off one corner. Cafés fill the terraces beneath the pastel façades, and the wooded slopes of Tâmpa mountain overlook the square. Markets and festivals gather here, and narrow streets lead to the old town gates.
